Résumé. Le dassie-adder, un être mi-daman, mi-vipère, est un petit cryptide méconnu d’Afrique australe. Cette contribution propose de retracer le débat ayant eu lieu quant à son existence possible et de discuter l’origine du mythe. Historiquement, le dassie-adder a surtout été suspecté d’être le résultat de la mauvaise identification d’un varan ou d’un serpent avalant un petit mammifère. Ici, une nouvelle hypothèse est proposée qui ferait du dassie-adder un être né d’un rapprochement entre le serpent de pluie mythologique des Khoisans et les damans producteurs d’hyraceum, tous deux partageant des propriétés anti-venins. Les cryptozoologues eux-mêmes ne croient plus que le dassie-adder puisse exister en tant qu’espèce à part, alors même qu’il est loin d’être le cryptide le plus extravagant. Tout cela est l’occasion de discuter de la nature pseudo-scientifique de la cryptozoologie.

Origin and history of a little-known cryptid, the dassie-adder
Abstract. The Dassie-adder, a half-rock-rabbit half-adder animal, is a relatively unknown cryptid from southern Africa. This paper aims at summarizing the scientific debate that took place about its possible existence and explore hypotheses for the origin of the myth. Historically, it has been proposed that the belief in this creature’s existence may have stemmed from the misidentification of a monitor lizard, or a snake caught swallowing a small mammal. A new hypothesis is here proposed: as the Khoisan assigned anti-venom properties to both the dassies and snakes (through hyraceum for the former, and snakestone for the latter) they may have been considered as a single entity, the Dassie-adder. Even cryptozoologists no longer believe in the Dassie-adder even though it is far from being the least believable cryptid. This questions the pseudo-scientific foundations of this field.
