Résumé. Fondé en 1949, le Comité belge pour l’investigation scientifique des phénomènes réputés paranormaux, dit « Comité Para » depuis 2014, est l’une des plus anciennes organisations francophones dévolues au scepticisme scientifique. Toutefois, au-delà des contributions de ses premiers acteurs, aucun travail historiographique n’a été réalisé. Dans cet article, nous reviendrons sur le contexte d’apparition d’un collectif – centré sur la personne du Dr Albert Bessemans – visant à rendre permanentes les commissions d’investigation des revendications de phénomènes « paranormaux », apparues sporadiquement lors de certaines controverses. Ce médecin était impliqué depuis l’entre-deux-guerres dans de multiples controverses relatives au spiritisme, au fakirisme, à la radiesthésie et au « charlatanisme » médical. D’autres acteurs de ces controverses montrent que la situation belge est connectée à celle des pays voisins, ce qui implique de l’intégrer dans le cadre plus large de l’histoire des sciences.

A brief history of the Comité Para’s genesis
Abstract. Founded in 1949, the Belgian Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Reputedly Paranormal Phenomena, known as the « Comité Para » since 2014, is one of the oldest French-speaking organizations devoted to scientific skepticism. However, beyond the contributions of its early players, no historiographical work has been carried out. In this article, we return to the context of the emergence of a collective – centered on the person of Dr. Albert Bessemans – aimed at making permanent the commissions investigating claims of « paranormal » phenomena, which sporadically appeared during some controversies. Since the interwar period, this doctor had been involved in numerous controversies concerning spiritualism, fakirism, dowsing and medical « quackery ». Other players in these controversies show that the Belgian situation is connected to that of neighboring countries, which means that it needs to be integrated into the broader framework of the history of science.
